Cigar Sasquatch- Last Minute Father’s Day Gift Buyer’s Guide

17 Jun

If your dad is anything like mine, the greatest gift he could receive for Father’s Day is time spent in comfort and relaxation in the bosom of his family. And fine cigars shared between father and son can provide just that. Cigars are family, cigars are tradition, cigars are ritual passed from generation to generation from fathers to sons throughout time. So what better way to honor your father on Father’s Day than with the gift of cigars?

I generally recommend purchasing box-quantities of cigars on-line, but with Father’s Day only a few days away, it’s a little late for ordering from the web. But finding a great cigar at a brick and mortar shop can be a daunting challenge. There are no on-line descriptions, no buyer ratings or reviews, and the staff is often no guide-book; they’re either busy with other customers, or more often the case, just don’t have any idea what they’re talking about.

Cigar Sasquatch- Olor Fuerte Magnum

12 Jun

It’s a gloomy June day as I write, and it occurs to me that June Gloom is winter’s last throes, its final goodbye before a long hot summer. In deference to winter, I reach for the Olor Fuerte Magnum, a big, beefy, dark cigar befitting a blustery winter day.

We have a love/hate relationship with summer around here. Of course it’s hot, though not a shot as some places. And it’s windy too, but not as windy as elsewhere. And it’s either humid, or it’s dry, though there are plenty of drier and more humid places around, as well. No, we don’t have the worst of anything, but we take everyone else’s worst and make it our own.

But it’s not all bad, either. Summer is a time of many Read the rest of this entry »

Tasty Tuesday: Alec Bradley Tempus Terra Nova

20 Apr

This robusto (5×50) has a rich dark natural Honduran Criollo wrapper, and a Nicaraguan/Honduran viso and ligero blend for smoothness and complexity. The flavors are mellow, oaky and nutty, with great depth and richness. It’s a nicely balance cigar. The draw was wide-open with a single wedge cut (maybe a little too wide), and the burn was a little troublesome, eventually tunneling so badly I had to ditch it before the second half. I’ll reserve a score for now, based on the undesirable burn, but it’s a great tasting cigar, so I’ve got high hopes that the next one will burn better.
