Tasty Tuesday: Brick House Toro

29 Jun

Brick House Cigars are a new blend from J.C. Newman Cigar Company, and are rapidly becoming one of my favorite modestly-priced premiums. This resurrected brand was made to honor the heritage of the original Brick House brand, a Cuban puro made for Julius Caesar Newman and the cigar company he founded in 1895. It’s a Nicaraguan puro, and features a hearty blend of all Cuban-seed tobaccos wrapped in a toothy Havana “Subido” wrapper.

The construction of the Toro (6×52) is rock-solid. The roll is Read the rest of this entry »

Cigar Sasquatch- Tatuaje Cojonu 2003

26 Jun

Cigar lovers, by their very nature, also often delight in the other gustatory pleasures, including fine foods, beers, wines, and liquors. The Cigar Sasquatch is no exception, and I’ve been privileged recently to experience a number of pinnacle moments in my life as a foodie and connoisseur of fine spirits. In the span of less than a month, I enjoyed the finest steak I’ve ever eaten, the best Bloody Mary I ever drank, and the finest and most expertly prepared piece of bacon (yes, bacon) I’ve ever had (not coincidentally, in the same meal, I also ate the best flapjacks I’ve ever had, too).

I also recently ate the spiciest food I’ve ever eaten. Read the rest of this entry »

Thirsty Thursday: The Cigar Lover’s Guide to Fine Spirits

24 Jun

Nothing goes better with a great cigar than a great beverage, and I’m often asked what the best beverage is to drink with a cigar. The traditional alcoholic beverages to pair with cigars are brandies, whiskeys and rums, or if you prefer a non-alcoholic beverage, a delicious cup of coffee. This shouldn’t be a surprise. Cigars pair well with beverages with rich, vaporous, aromatic qualities, or that offer flavors that balance or enhance those of your cigar. But certain cigars are better suited to certain beverages, and vice versa. So how do you decide what to drink and when? Allow me to offer a few suggestions.

Winston Churchill is credited with having been the first notable cigar smoker to regularly dip his cigars in brandy or port. While I don’t necessarily recommend this practice (to each his own) Read the rest of this entry »

Tasty Tuesday: Alec Bradley Family Blend VR1

22 Jun

The Alec Bradley Family Blend VR1 is a gorgeous Robusto (5.5×50) composed of rich Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers and a buttery Indonesian binder, finished in a nearly veinless rosy-hued Honduran Trojes wrapper. The roll is smooth and firm, and features a handsome triple-cap with a delightful little Cuban pigtail.

The bouquet is positively vibrant, with rich floral notes which evolve into highly aromatic herbal and fruit flavors on the palate. The blend also produces mild cinnamon and some earth, with a dry mouth feel and considerable depth. The draw from a cap cut was even and full, and produced an excellent smoke volume. Cigar Sasquatch Father’s Day Special- My Father #1

19 Jun

There are good dads and not-so-good dads. This one’s for all the good dads.

Fathers are interesting animals. They’re a strange hybrid of dictators and protectors, providers and punishers. They can be at times surly and tender, guarded and eruptive, emotional and stoic, understanding and demanding. Hard-wired to provide, they often have trouble receiving, and rarely will they ask for anything more than a cold drink, a comfortable chair, and a little peace and quiet.

But their duplicitous nature is not so complicated when you look at things form their perspective. They want little more than to see their children grow into good people, and they’re willing to do just about anything to make that happen. If that means being tough one minute and gentle the next, then that’s what they’ll do. And who could blame them? We children are a pain in the ass. Hands out, mouths open, heads in the clouds, feet going every-which-way, we’re a lot to deal with.

My Father Cigars were blended in secret by Jaime Garcia as a tribute to his father, Don Jose “Pepin” Garcia, and hand-made in Miami from rare Nicaraguan fillers, and finished in a flawless Read the rest of this entry »

Cigar Sasquatch- Last Minute Father’s Day Gift Buyer’s Guide

17 Jun

If your dad is anything like mine, the greatest gift he could receive for Father’s Day is time spent in comfort and relaxation in the bosom of his family. And fine cigars shared between father and son can provide just that. Cigars are family, cigars are tradition, cigars are ritual passed from generation to generation from fathers to sons throughout time. So what better way to honor your father on Father’s Day than with the gift of cigars?

I generally recommend purchasing box-quantities of cigars on-line, but with Father’s Day only a few days away, it’s a little late for ordering from the web. But finding a great cigar at a brick and mortar shop can be a daunting challenge. There are no on-line descriptions, no buyer ratings or reviews, and the staff is often no guide-book; they’re either busy with other customers, or more often the case, just don’t have any idea what they’re talking about.

Cigar Sasquatch- Olor Fuerte Magnum

12 Jun

It’s a gloomy June day as I write, and it occurs to me that June Gloom is winter’s last throes, its final goodbye before a long hot summer. In deference to winter, I reach for the Olor Fuerte Magnum, a big, beefy, dark cigar befitting a blustery winter day.

We have a love/hate relationship with summer around here. Of course it’s hot, though not a shot as some places. And it’s windy too, but not as windy as elsewhere. And it’s either humid, or it’s dry, though there are plenty of drier and more humid places around, as well. No, we don’t have the worst of anything, but we take everyone else’s worst and make it our own.

But it’s not all bad, either. Summer is a time of many Read the rest of this entry »

Cigar Sasquatch- Carlos Toraño Signature Collection Churchill

05 Jun

Today’s review is not some newly-discovered brand or recently launched blend, but it’s one that in a short time has become one of my favorite blends in regular rotation. And while I have sampled this blend previously (EXTENSIVELY), I have not yet done a full critical review. It’s something I discovered by chance, thought not without searching, supporting the long-held truth that chance favors the prepared mind.

The idea of chance weighs heavily on my mind today. I was recently involved in the most serious Read the rest of this entry »
